Highest Priced Prescription Drugs

Some of the highest priced prescription drugs are needed the most by many Americans. The high prices often make these medications inaccessible for those looking to get better. These drugs include cures for dangerous diseases and rare autoimmune disorders. With costs soaring for name brand medication, what can be done to lower the cost of your prescriptions? One answer is by entering a prescription assistance program which offers discounts directly from manufacturers.

What are the most expensive prescription drugs?

We’ve compiled a list of some of the highest priced prescription drugs. Some of the prices seem astronomical, especially if you’re without health insurance or are in the Medicare “Doughnut Hole”. This is where a prescription assistance program can be very helpful in lowering the cost.

  • Viekira Pak, AbbVie, $34,600 – Viekira Pak is a hepatitis C drug meant to cure those with the virus. Hepatitis C is a disease that’s transmitted by blood.
  • Firazyr (icatibant), Shire, $35,800 – The drug Firazyr is used to treat a rare condition called hereditary angioedema, or HAE, a blood disorder that causes episodic swelling. This price is for three syringes worth of the drug.
  • Cuprimine (penicillamine), Valeant, $39,800 – It’s used to treat Wilson disease, a rare inherited disease that causes copper to build up in the body. The price is for 120 capsules; one is taken after every meal.
  • Sovaldi (sofosbuvir), Gilead Sciences, $81,000 – Sovaldi, the first of a new set of hepatitis C cures that hit the market in 2013, came under a lot of fire for costing $1,000 a pill, adding up to $84,000 for a 12-week course of treatment.

This is just a sample of some of the most expensive prescription drugs. Soaring medication costs have been in the news lately and awareness is being raised about the unfair pricing practices of many drug manufacturers.
