Why are Prescription Drugs so Expensive?

In the United States, prescription drug costs continue to rise and these costs are passed on to the patients needing those medications. Drug manufacturing companies have a monopoly on the cost of prescription medication. The government has enacted little regulation to rein in the rising costs but over the last few years consumers have been raising awareness.

For example, the EpiPen price hike has been under intense scrutiny and even prompted congressional hearings into the subject. The CEO of the maker of EpiPen, Heather Bresch, has accepted “full responsibility” for the price hike and settled with the Justice Department for $46 million because of the controversy.

As the price a manufacturer places on a drug and what it ends up costing consumers out-of-pocket continues to rise, alternatives are readily available to help lower the cost of your medication. If you lack health insurance, prescription drug coverage, or are in the Medicare doughnut hole gap, a patient assistance program (PAP) can provide free to low-cost medication to qualified patients.
